Chapter Eleven
Before daylight Iâm woken by an urgent rapping. I stagger to the door, hearing Brendan on the other side. âKate, itâs me, let me in.â
I yell, âGive me a minute,â before running to the bathroom to wrap myself in a towelling robe.
As soon as I open the door I know thereâs something wrong. His face is white, filled with anguish. His tall frame filling the doorway, he says, âWill you marry me?â
If heâd asked me to accompany him on a trip to the moon I couldnât have been more surprised.
âYouâre drunk,â is all I can find to say.
âIâve never been more sober or more serious in my entire life. Watch me walk a straight line.â
Marching past me he walks up and down the room while I shut the door and stroll into the room.
âWhat about Liam?â
âWhat about him?â
âI thought you and he were an item?â
âWe were â we are, but to be honest with you, my love, Iâve had it with men.â
âLiam Hennessy cannot be classified as a man.â
âOK, Iâve had it with boys. Iâm fifty-two. Itâs time I settled down. And Iâve decided I want to have a child. What do you say, Kate?â
Iâm laughing; itâs laughable, the most outrageous thing Iâve ever heard.
âYouâre gay, Brendan, or has that slipped your mind? Queer as they come. Bent as a nine bob note. Remember once you said to me youâd rather eat a four-day-old-haddock than a woman?â
His turn to laugh. âThatâs why I love you so damn much. You make me laugh. Iâve never laughed as much with anyone as I do with you.â
âDitto. But I donât turn you on. If I took my clothes off and made a pass at you now, youâd probably throw up.â
The corners of his mouth curl in disdain. Iâve seen the expression before, rarely directed at me I might add; itâs usually reserved for his sister or a discarded lover.
âSex, my lovely Kate, is not everything. Lots of married couples do not copulate. Thereâs no reason why we canât have a very good marriage, better even, without sex. Messy business, and complicated at the best of times. Think of the child we might have, with my brains and your beauty.â
âWait a minute, Brendan: are you accusing me of being stupid?â
âAbsolutely not. I was merely painting a pretty picture, and as far as sex is concerned, youâd be free to do as you please. I mean, take lovers if you choose, as long as youâre discreet. The same would apply to me, of course.â
âBut I can do that now, Brendan, if I choose.â
Regarding me with concentrated intent he says, âDo you choose, Kate?â
I stammer, âSometimes, there have been a few occasions.â
Staring into the middle distance I reminisce. Tim Duvalâs reputation had preceded him: one of the most influential art dealers in the world, he had an international clientele and galleries in London, Geneva and New York. The first thing that struck me the day he came to look at my work was his eyes: intelligent dark brown pools, the left one flecked with green.
